The Differences Between Product Backlogs and Sprint Backlogs

Scrum Framework relies heavily on teamwork and organization for each and every project it is applied to. For every project, the Team uses a Backlog system to maintain data about upcoming projects or updates made to already released products. These databases provide the foundation that allows the Teams to make a clear plan for production and development. There are two main Backlogs used in a Scrum Team: Product Backlogs and Sprint Backlogs.

Product Backlog

The Product Backlog is managed exclusively by the Certified Scrum Product Owner. The Backlog  itself is more than a simple database of components for an individual product. It is an ever-changing, dynamic list of considerations for current and future releases. It exists as long as a product is in use and actively being developed to suit the needs of the industry. The Product Backlog is organized in order of importance, so the Scrum Team has a clear idea of what to work on and where the focus of their development needs to go. Any changes to the product including glitches, bugs, and updated priorities are logged in the Product Backlog, providing a full record of the product’s development history.

Sprint Backlog

The Sprint Backlog refers to the items from the Product Backlog that are the focus of a current Sprint project. This Backlog also includes the Development Team’s plan to reach their Sprint Goal and the necessary steps they must take to succeed. The Team also updates and changes the Sprint Backlog as they progress. This allows the Development Team to monitor their progress daily, giving them a clear idea of what needs to be completed for the remainder of the Sprint. Unlike the Product Backlog, the Sprint Backlog is only managed by the Development Team.
