What is a Certified Scrum Product Owner?

In our previous blog, we discussed the role of the ScrumMaster in a Scrum Team. While they are a necessary component to any Scrum organization, they can’t do everything on their own. The Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO) helps facilitate the production process while implementing Scrum methods.

What is a Certified Scrum Product Owner?

The Product Owner is, quite literally, the owner of the product. They understand what type of product will best serve the industry and potential customers. They are the face of the brand and represent the business as a whole when interacting with the public. Many successful Certified Product Owners have experience as product managers and lead tech developers.

What do Certified Scrum Product Owners do?

First and foremost, Product Owners must have a clear vision of what they want to develop, known as the Product Backlog. They must then explain those things to the rest of the Scrum Team to ensure the development stage proceeds efficiently. Once a plan of execution is developed, the Product Owner must make sure the team follows that plan and will help them develop solutions to any roadblocks that come up along the way.

They must know what technical specifications the product must meet to be successful and should help the development team by answering any questions that come up during the course of development. Any changes to the existing requirements or new requirements that must be met need to be communicated with the rest of the team in a timely manner. Product Owners must then coordinate with the development team to determine the order in which requirements will be implemented.

While this is not a comprehensive list of the responsibilities Certified Scrum Product Owners have on a given project, it should give you a general idea if this certification path is for you. Agile Strategic Solution can help you improve your management skills, giving you the tools and knowledge you need to implement Scrum strategies at your workplace.
